Meet our Infectious Disease Specialists

Mohamad Abbas, MD

Dr. Abbas is a graduate of the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, where he earned his medical degree, and BS in Biology. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Dr. Abbas is board certified in infectious diseases, and a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He is also certified in hyperbaric medicine. He enjoys practicing all aspects of infectious diseases, with special interest in infections in the immunocompromised, hardware/prosthesis related infections, and difficult to heal wounds.

Peter Bornstein, MD, MBA

Dr. Bornstein has a BA from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and his Medical Doctor degree from Rush Medical College, Chicago. He completed a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, and his Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago. Dr. Bornstein has a special interest in travel medicine. Dr. Bornstein also earned an MBA from the Carlson School of Management (CSOM) of the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis on Management and is an Affiliate of the Medical Industry Leadership Institute of the CSOM.

M. Etienne Djevi, MD

Dr. Mankpondehou Etienne Djevi (Etienne Djevi for short) was born and raised in Benin (west Africa) where he went to primary and secondary school with an accent on chemistry, physics and biology. After his baccalaureate, he completed a year of preparatory study covering the areas listed above before passing the national exam giving access to medical school in Benin. He graduated from a combined medical school/residency school in 2004. He worked in Benin for 2 years as internist before moving to MN in 2006. Dr. Djevi completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota. His interests are general infectious disease, Tuberculosis, quality improvement (with emphasis on collection of specimens from the Operating room for the microbiology lab) and motivation of underprivileged kids for education.

Ashley Husebye, MD

Dr. Husebye was born and raised in Minnesota. She studied biology at Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She went to medical school at Creighton University in Nebraska. Dr. Husebye completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center and earned her Infectious Disease Fellowship through the University of Minnesota. She is interested in general infectious disease.

Michael Klevay, MD

Dr. Klevay was born and raised in North Dakota.  He graduated with BAs in Music and Chemistry from Indiana University in Bloomington, and received his MD from the University of Wisconsin.  He completed both his Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of Iowa.  He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America, and has an interest in general infectious diseases.

Gary Kravitz, MD

Dr. Gary Kravitz founded St. Paul Infectious Disease Associates in 1982.  He earned a BS from the University of Michigan, an MD from Northwestern University and did an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Chicago.  Dr. Kravitz is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology in America.  He has been named to the Best Doctors in the Twin Cities every year since the list was started over 15 years ago, and to the Best Doctors in America Database 2009-2010. Edwin Pereira, MD

Dr. Edwin Pereira was born and raised in Minnesota. He received his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and his Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. His interests are in multi-drug resistant infections and antibiotic stewardship.

Ayesha Rashid, MD

Dr. Rashid graduated from Aga Khan University, Medical School, Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Minnesota, followed by a Clinical Chief Residency. She earned a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Rashid\\\’s interests include immigrant and refugee medicine, bioethics, global health (focusing on women with HIV/AIDS), tuberculosis, and antimicrobial stewardship. She has presented her research in local and national meetings, as well as in several publications. In regard to patient care, she is dedicated and compassionate as a physician and clinician.

Jason Wirtz, MD

Dr. Wirtz was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa.  He attended the University of Iowa, where he received both his BA and MD degrees.  He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa, and took his Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at The Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.  He has a special interest in sepsis syndromes and bloodstream infections.
